Fuzzy Logic "Pale Ale." 5.40% ABV. On-draught at Bread & Butter restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City in July 2016. 350ml pour for 60000 VND.
APPEARANCE: Creamy frothy off-white cap sticks around for a good 8 minutes. Sticky, with a gorgeous thick consistency. Leaves thick lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.
Body colour is a clear copper of average vibrance. Clean and filtered, with no visible yeast or lees within.
Appears aptly carbonated. It's a nice looking pale ale.
AROMA: Resinous and floral in terms of hop character, with any bitterness seemingly well balanced out by the pale malt backbone.
Aromatic intensity is average. Promises a conventional pale ale with perhaps a bit too much malty sweetness.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Has a clean pale malt backbone with a mild hop presence bringing primarily floral flavours. There's some resinous hoo character there too. Attenuation could be better; the malts edge out the hops a bit too much, and too much sweetness is present. A more assertive and/or diverse hop profile would help step this up, but I suppose if you're importing all your hops your selection is limited.
Mouthfeel is right for the style: coating, medium-bodied, smooth, wet, refreshing, and approachable. Well-carbonated. Good overall presence on the palate. Still, a more oily mouthfeel would help emphasize the resinous hop flavour, bringing a harmony of texture and taste to this beer.
OVERALL: Drinkers accustomed to British real ales will find this mildly hopped pale ale caters to their tastes. Hopheads looking for something more in line with the world-class pale ales coming out of Denmark and North America will be underwhelmed by its subdued hop presence. It's great to see a proper pale ale available in Vietnam, and I look forward to seeing how Fuzzy Logic develops in the years to come.
