4.60% ABV. 60000 VND for a 330ml draught pour @ B3 Steakhouse in Ho Chi Minh City.
APPEARANCE: Neat white head of 3-4cm width. Retention is good - ~6 minutes. Head has a nice frothy consistency and a good complexion.
Translucent pale copper of average vibrance. No yeast or lees are visible within. Obviously filtered. Appears well-carbonated.
AROMA: Pleasantly hoppy - floral notes, lemongrass, vague fruit. Clean pale and Pilsner malts give it mild sweetness. Subtle esters and phenols indicate obvious ale yeast.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE & TEXTURE: Floral and semisweet, with a clean refreshing presence on the palate. Subtle yeasty notes - phenols, esters, almost a hint of spice - help this along, keeping it from being too simplistic. Buried lemongrass is noticeable.
Soft, smooth, wet, and light to medium-bodied. Well-carbonated.
Less a proper golden ale and more a pale ale with some yeasty intricacy added and the hop pungency toned down.
OVERALL: Hopped to appeal both to Western drinkers and to Vietnamese simultaneously, which is a tough line to walk. But I do think it manages, and the result is an easy drinking ale that would go well with food and clobbers Vietnamese macrolagers in every respect save for price. A brew I'd happily revisit, though I do think in terms of the Vietnamese ale market, Pasteur Street is the real winner.
