300ml pour on-draught @ Tres Minis in Ho Chi Minh City for 50000 VND.
APPEARANCE: No head nor lacing upon serving. Dark copper body. Lacks vibrance, but it does seem filtered. Not the liveliest IPA appearance either way.
AROMA: Piney and resinous American hop aromatics. Pale malt. Caramalt. The hop presence isn't as pronounced as I'd expect in a good IPA. I worry about balance.
Aroma is subdued, but pleasant.
TASTE: Bubblegum phenol. Pale and caramalt sweetness. Mild floral hop character.
Hop profile is weak for an IPA; this is more in line with an English pale ale in terms of hop pungency. It's too sweet as a result, though still enjoyable (and still "hoppy" in terms of Southeast Asian norms).
I do like it, though it leaves something to be desired in terms of depth and intricacy of flavour.
TEXTURE: Style-appropriate. Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, coating, and well-carbonated, with a nice overall presence on the palate.
Not hot, gushed, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, scratchy, or otherwise faulty.
OVERALL: It's great to see more IPAs popping up in Vietnam (read: Ho Chi Minh City), but I'd sooner gravitate towards Pasteur Street's Jasmine IPA when in the mood for this style. Still, it's drinkable flavourful fare, and would pair well with food.
