On tap at The 1925 along Joo Chiat in Singapore for reasonably-affordable for a craft beer. Plus points for being a South-East Asian Brew. We need better beers in this region.

L: Cloudy dull blonde. Through the glass it looks like cheap yellow plastic jewellery. Poured nice one thumb head which quickly dissipates. Light fizziness. It doesn't look all THAT bad, just... uninspired.

S: Deep whiff. First thing that comes out is the maltiness. It's sweet and really obvious. There's something else in there - it's subtle. And sweet. Lychees maybe? Even lemongrass? It makes sense, though. This IS a Vietnamese brew and anything that brings out that culture is definitely in here.

T: Now comes the swig. Rolling on the tongue you really do get that intense sweetness. It's not malty as it is tropical fruit. And it stays. Boy does that flavor stay. I'm writing this sentence and I can still taste that lychee/lemongrass sweetness. I've even got a feeling that they use some South-East Asian herbs in here. It's a hit and miss thing I guess - it's a definite miss to me.

F: It's lightly fizzy. Easy enough to drink. At 5.5% it's pretty sessionable if you can get over the sweetness. Light and as straightforward as ordering it from the barkeep. Don't expect your world to be changed and you should be fine.

O: Not a half bad beer. It's easy enough to drink and pretty local (for me). ASEAN pride FTW. In all honesty, come with an open mind and you should be fine. It's a representation of the region and it's culinary culture.

~300ml draught pour @ Tres Ninos in Ho Chi Minh City for 35000 VND.

APPEARANCE: 1cm white cap over a murky hazy dark yellow. Appears unfiltered. Head retention is a meagre 1 minute. No lacing.

AROMA: Yeasty phenols, blonde (pils) malts, floral Willamette hop character. It leans Belgian, actually - or maybe that's just me misinterpreting the phenolic character. In any case, the (saccharomyces) ale yeast runs the show, but a strong fruity character is also in play - I can't quite put my finger on it, but I think it's Mandarin orange, if not lychee?

Aromatic intensity is average. Suggests a clean drinking refreshing ale with nice balance.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Saccharine, with a syrupy slippery feel that emphasizes the lychee. Pils malts are inadequate, bending too easily to the whims of the yeast. Attenuation is off; this is too sweet.

Smooth, wet, light-bodied, well-carbonated, somewhat refreshing.

OVERALL: It's drinkable, but not quite my favourite Phat Rooster ale. The lychee sweetness is off-putting, and the beer lacks an adequate malt backbone. Willamette is an odd choice for a beer that seems to want to be a straightforward drinkable American blonde. It's nice to see more craft ale in Vietnam, but I'd sooner go for Gallo Negro.
