Alternatively billed as "Porter" and "Stout" at Tres Ninos in Ho Chi Minh City, which may indicate something about Phat Rooster's staff's awareness of style distinctions. 300ish ml draught pour @ Tres Ninos for 50000 VND.
APPEARANCE: Head retention is less than a minute, and no lacing is left as it recedes. Body colour is, predictably, an opaque black.
AROMA: It's got a nice rich chocolate aroma, along with the usual dark malt sweetness and possibly a vanillin phenol from the ale yeast. Basic for a porter, but appropriate for the style.
Suggests a no-frills expression of a porter. No roasted barley presence here.
TASTE: Too sweet for my tastes, lacking any bitterness from roasted barley, coffee, or hops to balance out its prominent chocolate (malt) sweetness. Dark malts fill out the body, but yeah, it ends up very shallow and simple for a porter.
Still, I do like it, and it's great to see a porter in Vietnam.
TEXTURE: Smooth and wet, which is true to style, but it's uncharacteristically thin. The lack of sufficient body contributes to its weak presence on the palate, but at least it's aptly carbonated.
OVERALL: It's a very basic stab at the style, but Phat Rooster is new and it's impressive they can brew this consistently for their distribution. I wouldn't get it again as my first choice, but expats eager for a porter will find this serviceable. Of course, there's also Pasteur Street's vastly superior Toasted Coconut Porter available across Ho Chi Minh City (and other cities North thereof)...
