"Bia den" Dark Prague beer (Tmavy). 35000 VND for a 330ml draught pour at the brewpub (compared to 32000 VND for the Bia Vang, and 39000 for the Bia Xanh).
A: Frothy creamy head over a deep dark brown body. Head retention is a respectable 5ish minutes. Looks like a classic Tmavy.
Sm: Cream, faint stonefruit, bready malty sweetness, caramel.
Suggests a soft balanced plain brew that lives up to the "liquid bread" designation.
Aromatic intensity is low.
T: Brown bread, caramel, cream, hints of dark fruit. Balanced and enjoyable. A straightforward Tmavy with no special or unique characteristics, but also no faults or off-flavours.
Mf: Creamy, smooth, wet, medium-bodied, slightly overcarbonated. Bready and filling, yet still approachable. Not at all boozy, hot, astringent, or otherwise faulty.
It's damn near perfect for a Tmavy, actually.
O: One of those rare gems you just stumble across, Bia den is a Tmavy better than most American attempts at the style. Who would expect an unheard of Vietnamese restaurant to make a beer so true to Czech tradition? The mouthfeel almost couldn't be better, and the flavour profile while shallow and straightforward is right on the money. A drinkable-as-hell Tmavy that if served blind I'd swear was Czech.
Unfortunately, even Vietnam can't beat Czech prices (though this has no effect on my rating).
