OUTLOOK FARM CITRA PALE ALE 10/8/19
Gifted by daughter Julie, who had acquired a fourpack at the brewery. No canning date visible.
Poured from the 16 oz. can into an English nonick pint,
a; Translucent copper with an inch plus thick white head which receded to thick even surface foam and dense to spotty lacing.
s; Caramel malt initially, but later char becomes more prominent, as though you are near a campfire that was just put out.
t; The malt overlaid with a moderate hop bite and dominant char notes. Sweet to dry finish.
m; Medium, good body and lots of carbonation tingle.
o; Unexpectedly English in appearance, with the Citra hops and English (?) malt clashing and ultimately losing out to strong and persistent notes of char, as though it was all brewed or aged in charcoal lined barrels. Might be nice by a campfire, and the char notes eventually tend to lure rather than repel, perhaps because you can't believe a brew that looks like that has so much Irish stoutishness in its taste. More bitterness than the 35 IBUs stated on the can would suggest as well. Rather unpleasant at first, but tends to grow more appealing as it warms.
