So Ive sat on this 32 oz crowler for a little bit. Tonight seems like a good time to open it. Its a gift from my brother Brian, thanks man!
My crowler says 18.5% ABV on the label as opposed to the 16% listed on this site. the beer is being poured from a cold crowler into my snifter.
Beer pours a murky caramel color with minimal beige head of about 1 cm foaming up even with aggressive pour. I actually do get a little bit of cascading carbonation on the pour. The foam fades slowly to a wispy surface layer.
The aroma is some grainy caramel notes and some brown sugar mixing with a bit of fruity mango. I also get some vegetal note that could be hops or from the peppers. Not a lot of booze note for such a big beer.
First sip reveals a smooth textured brew that leaves a bit of stickiness after each mouthful. The beer has very fine and spacious carbonation. Body is a little lighter than I would have thought but the higher ABV may be some of that impact.
Flavor is sweet as well. I get some caramel and a bit of roasted malt note or dark cacao hit, then some sweet mango fruit in the middle and the finish is warming pepper capcasin note that lingers a bit after each swallow. I actually dont get any hint of the 18.5% ABV which is probably pretty dangerous for this one.
Overall this is a tasty brew, but the pepper heat lingering and the ABV will make this crowler tough for me to completely finish solo. The beer feels and tastes much more like an American barleywine than an IPA or DIPA as I just dont get a lot of hop character at this point.
