I have a very hard time calling this a barleywine - There are strong caramel malted characteristics and light sweetness that are characteristic of a barleywine, but the imperialistic hopped character pushes me towards calling this an IIPA. imperial amber, or an imperial red ale.

However, this beer is absolutely delicious regardless, the bitter and biting hop character meshes perfect with the savory and satisfying malt - a fantastic brew.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip/globe glass.

Deep mahogany bodied, with hints of garnet hues. Quite dark for an American style, comes off more English looking. Head is a light tan to khaki color at a solid two finger height, and good staying power. Clingy top, a bit of scattered lacing, and thick tall half finger collar. Real neat looker.

Lots of toasted malt, and touches of caramel syrup. Mellow qualities but also a bit of subtle hop character, but more malt presence than anticipated. Some faint touches of milk chocolate make a good presence too.

First impression on the palate seems to hint more to classic American strong ale, but there is a twist. Rich caramel and toffee notes but with an almost sharp taffy like quaility. Large hop angle of classic grapefuit and pine notes, particularly on the finish. More hop punch and subtle chocolate notes on the finish. Big touches of citrus and steely grapefruit on the end.

This really reminds me of Stone's Arrogant Bastard Ale, but with a thicker twist. That's really good company to be included in.
