Poured from the bottle into a Barn Hammer tulip/globe glass. vintage 2016.
Creamy and tan colored, even a bit yellow tinged head of slightly over two fingers. Sits on a solid black walnut body with a touch of dessert red hue. Sits with a good beveled puck while settling. Solid looking stout.
Real nice nose. Deep aromatics of black licorice and tobacco. Touch of roast, but with thicker pasty like sensations. Seems almost baltic porter like as well. Hints a little of char as well but there's a thicker malt body that kicks in more richness.
Excellent full palate. Rich flavoring texture of tobacco and pine like subtle hop finish. Bitter roast and brings out a thick black licorice flavor. There's a depth here that is far bigger than your average Russian Imperial, probably from aging though more than anything. The mouthfeel produces a rich and velvety texture but still remains light on the tongue. Tobacco angle even goes for a hint of smoke just barely, getting into beefy jerky and salt finishes.
The brewery went for a special brew, and boy did they ever make one. Solid job and the perfect seasonal winter brew.
