South Africa Lager was brewed as a once off for the Fifa World Cup as apparently their branded beers (Castle, Hansa etc.) are not allowed to be sold near the stadiums due to Budweiser's sponsorship of the tournament.
After a few comparisons with other SAB brands we have found this to be a new beer and not just one of the known brands rebottled.
Appearance: South Africa lager pours a very light golden colour, typical of an adjunct lager. The head is white and of decent size but as one would expect it fades pretty quickly leaving very sparse lace.
Smell: South Africa Lager has a fairly weak nose (even for the style). A fairly sweet note from the maize adjunct and some cooked vegetables are about all that is noted, if I concentrate very very hard there is a minute amount of stale hop.
Taste: As with the nose the flavour is fairly light. Again sweet adjuncts dominate; pale malt and hops are present in trace amounts. Overall the flavour is lighter and contains far less unpleasant aspects than regular Castle Lager.
Mouthfeel: Very light body, with a slightly lower level of carbonation than many beers in the style.
Drinkability: Well not as unpleasant as Castle Lager, South Africa Lager is still not a beer I'd choose to drink.
