Succulent with fruit and soft with creamy effects, sorbet usually suggests there's something moderately tart and balanced with a sweet slightly creamy balance. But not here. When Decadent Ales say "sorbet", they actually mean "sourbet".
Their tropical fruit drenched Mango Sorbet kicks off with pale peach; pouring with a part fizzy, part frothy cap before building its sour scent of tangy citrus, exotic tropical scents and a modest vanilla tone that teases the nose with Hawaiian punch and sherbet. Gentle with maltiness on the early palate, hints of sourdough, saltwater taffy and agave begin to take shape.
But its the mango and underlying beer sourness that wash over the middle palate. The sour ale's natural tendencies toward crabapple, lime, lemon, gooseberry and white grape shape a much brisk sourness than expected. Reaching across the sourness and fledgling malts lies a mango presence that's redolent with orange, papaya and peach. Hints of white wine, cider and pineapple precede a slightly peppery, bitter bite late on the tongue.
Light in body, a mild mannered creaminess is the only buffer from a sour finish, but a short finish of creamsickle and bracing sourness washes the thirst with ease with a brief aftertaste of brine, burlap and sourdough.
