Smooth, tropical and driving memories of those beach-side cocktails, Decadent Ales sets their sights on a strong imperial status IPA with the reckless additions of coconut flavor to have all of us going coco for Coconut Swirl IPA.
Deep golden and with burnt orange depths of saturation, the Smoothie-styled IPA takes hazy ale to the extreme. While floating a bone white froth, its succulent scent is driven by coconut, vanilla and cream but also has aspects of other tropical fruit, citrus and herb towing closely behind. Sweet, creamy and pleasantly starchy on the early palate, the taste of poundcake, honey and cereal anchor the beer's early impressions.
It doesn't take long before the coconut evades the balance and dictates the middle palate. Cashew, pecan, macadamia can all be found in the nutty flavors, but the taste of heavy cream, vanilla and cream soda lifts the coconut character well above a complementary mix of orange, grapefruit, pineapple and mango. With a hint of bitterness and herbal spice, a late taste of gin-like botanicals, light hemp and mint balances enough of the lingering malt starches to reach an off-cloying sense of drinkability.
Deliciously smooth, bright and calming, Coconut Swirl finishes on the sweet side of malty-dry with a long linger of cereal, vanilla and nutmeg. As its herbal hops extend slightly past the smooth coconut impressions, they do so with a mild vodka heat and a fresh minty afterglow.
