In Japanese folklore, when utterly wicked humans beyond redemption die and finally sent to hell, they transform into demons called Oni (鬼). As servants of the ruler and judge of the underworld Enma Daioh (閻魔大王), the Oni are the ones who mete out the punishments on the spirits who have committed misdeeds, usually armed with an iron club (kanabo金棒) or a sword. However, some Oni transform during life and stay in the human world, assaulting and harassing the living, and mostly for fun.
Our first anniversary brew, Oni XIPA is steps hoppy than your standard IPA, drawing out personality from local malts and single-hopped with Sorachi Ace of Japanese origin. Upon opening the Gates, a bold and zesty flurry of lemon greets you, with the flavor staying throughout your journey. The flavor intensifies as you go deeper. Its verdant character builds up on the palate as dill and coriander surface, lending it a slight grassy flavor with a hint of spice. A bitter yet floral and citrusy flavor lingers like a bad habit you dare not let go. But you better watch your back. By the end of this round, would you rather have another, or be at the other end of the demon’s blade? You be the judge.
