Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a slightly fizzy, three finger dark khaki head that dissipates slowly to a thick cap with solid lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, bakers chocolate, hints of coffee and vanilla. Flavor is dark toasted malt, chocolate, vanilla, lactose and a little coffee, especially in the finish. Medium bodied with moderate creaminess, nice mouth feel. Very well done oatmeal stout. Although fairly balanced, there is a lean towards the lactose/vanilla flavors that give this an almost milk stout character. The aroma is promising and the if first sip seem subdued compared to the aroma, but cocoa and malt are sturdy enough to support the other flavors through to the finish. I've had a few oatmeal stouts lately that had light bodies, but this has the nice creaminess I expect from oatmeal in the malt. Nicely done. I see they do a mixed pack of adjunct versions of this seasonally and I'm going to watch for it. I think the base stout will work well for that. Looks, smells, feels and tastes fine.
