In the 1890s, the Circle R Hotel on N. Second Street was an elegant brothel run by Madame Edith Brown in Terre Haute’s notorious Red Light District. This English Brown Ale – just like Madame Edith – has a rich complexity that embodies style and elegance. Bready, toasty–malt, with notes of caramel, toffee, and a hint of dark chocolate. Bold malt flavor, but easy to drink.

Poured from a 16 oz undated paper label can into a pint glass. First pour of about 4 ounces left a tremendous head that took 4-5 minutes to dissipate enough to pour the rest - slowly.
The strong smell of burnt chocolate immediately hits you, along with the alcohol smell. Almost smells like a whiskey.
The taste is the best aspect - dark chocolate.
The feel of this beer is unlike any other I can recall - almost "prickly". Truly strange.

APPEARANCE: Deep dark opaque brown, with a light khaki head. Almost no lace.
NOSE: Chocolate, caramel, toffee…very nice.
TASTE: Rich caramel and a hint of smoky, roasty malts. Drinks very easily. A superb brown ale and one I’d love to have again.

16oz undated can poured into a nonic pint glass at fridge temp 5.3% ABV. The beer pours opaque brownish amber in color with abundant & dense khaki head. The head recedes to 3/8" cap and leaves an impressive lacing. The aroma is mild with cocoa powder and caramel. The taste is tangy cocoa up front with the toasted malt backbone popping through mid-palate. The finish offers dark chocolate and medium hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, good. This one seems to even out some as it warms, which is true to style. Would drink again.
