As a Sega kid, I absolutely couldn't pass this up.
16 oz can for review + a 4 pack, no date on carrier or can, poured into Ploughshare glass.
Gorgeous glowing orange-yellow kinda like OJ, with a creamy fingernail of head.
Aroma of orange peels, red grapefruit, passion fruit, tangerine, and a stick of Juicy Fruit.
Flavor brings slight dry grass and orange peel to start, with orange oil, persimmon, and apricot following; a little earthy - pine and ash; passion fruit, and some red grapefruit peel. Heavy hop resins. Nearly west coast in its palate scrubbing. Juicy red grapefruit on the finish, with slight tangerine. Breaths are red grapefruit. It sure is juicy, but I could use a bit less resins/pipe bowl and more sweet fruit.
Feel is juicy, acidic, creamy, just wonderful all around. Really digs in and bites the gums and cheeks. Very exciting. Moderate warming alcohol which is surprising at 5.8%, so it's probably a little higher than advertised. Lingering heat and juicy acidity on the finish.
Overall, a solid NEPA from the guys at Terre Haute. It is a little tough drinking due to the bitterness, but the flavors are there if you can get past the distracting amount of resin and bitter peels. It's almost as if Alpha King was a New England Pale Ale. The taste category is probably closer to a 4, but this 4.09 rating is about where I'm at honestly. Pretty good, but not exceptional.
Price paid : $13.99 / 4 pack
