Originally brewed by Belgian Monks, this style requires patience and attention to detail, using the finest ingredients and aging to maturity. The use of Belgian yeast imparts dark fruit, plum, fig, and spice notes to complement the rich, bready, caramel malt that embodies the style.

APPEARANCE: Dark opaque copper/red. Little head and no lace.
NOSE: Dark fruit, yeast, raisins…traditional and respectable.
TASTE: Tangy fruit and Belgian yeast right away. Lingering notes of raisin, leather and a wee bit of warmth. Pretty faithful and solid. Well-done!

16oz undated can poured into a tulip glass at just above fridge temp 10.8% ABV. The beer pours bright medium brown in color with ruby highlights and light brown head. The head is cola-like and fizzles away to a pencil thin ring. No lacing. The aroma is mild in strength featuring caramel and dark fruit. The taste is semisweet caramel malt with flavors of plum and spice before a mildly bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied with above average carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Alcohol is mostly hidden. Overall, good. Nice try, but the lack of lasting head, thin feel and simple flavor score this far below true Belgian versions and most American ones as well.
