A 330ml bottle with a BB of June 2017, so it's a bit out of date. Given to me a while back as a gift. The name translates as 'fierce fire'; the label describes this as a pale ale brewed with lime juice and habanero chillies.
A: Poured into a tulip. Bottle conditioned. A deep, hazy amber hue with plentiful fine sediment and moderate carbonation. Yields a smallish head of white foam that rapidly settles and dissipates.
S: Aroma of sweet lime juice with hints of citrus zest, caramel malt, earthy yeast, vague leafiness and a twinge of chilli. The hops don't get much of a look in. This is actually more reminiscent of 'tequila' beers like Desperados than anything.
T: Tastes of lime juice and caramel malt, with subtle notes of citrus, earthy yeast and faint hops. All these are rapidly drowned out, however, by the serious chilli heat that engulfs the palate within a few seconds of taking a mouthful. The heat lasts for a while after swallowing before slowly receding. It's fair to say that this is not a typical pale ale and the hop character doesn't make itself known. Little bitterness but a lingering afterburn.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth with soft carbonation, but the sensation is dominated by chilli heat on the palate. Good body for the strength; almost creamy. Aftertaste of super hot chillies!
O: Well, this was a surprise. I didn't realise it was a chilli beer until I'd taken the first sip (thus removing all doubt). Subpar looks with poor head retention, while the aroma and flavour are a mix of sweet lime juice, mild caramel malt and brutal habanero chillies. Body is alright (heat notwithstanding). OK, but this is strictly one for chilli heads who can handle the fire. Anyone else is going to be disappointed.
