From the heart of the hop cosmos comes the Korben. A dazzling constellation of Simcoe, Centennial and Mosaic with a huge passionfruit shine, soaring tropicals, subtle sweetness and a sublime bitter finish, it’s as artfully composed as the music of the spheres.

Appearance Light chill haze in a deep gold glass that holds a white cover that laces.

Aroma Dank hops overwhelm any base malts, leafy and lightly earthy hops too.

Taste Hops of course, but it doesn't go very bitter. Tea flavor, just a hint of sweetness.

Feel Medium body, medium carbonation, clean finish.

Overall One of the best Australian beers I found. Very solid IIPA.

Akasha are clearly fans of the seminal works of Luc Besson, especially The Fifth Element, in naming this beer after Korben Dallas, the cab driver cum former-commando cum saver-of-the-universe, played by (possibly) the most famous half American/half German action actor: Bruce Willis. Not exactly sure where Akasha have chosen to make a connection between their DIPA and a hero in a Sci-Fi film, perhaps it’s just because Korben Dallas is a total badass… who knows, and more importantly who cares if the beer is good? Semasiologists I guess. Me? I just like a good DIPA. Will it be good? I’ve been waiting some time to try Korben D. and the brew date is 23/10/18 – this beer is RTD now, time to crack it.

Poured from a 375ml can into a Duvel tulip.

A: Hazed light-amber body, chalky white head that starts at 1 inch and slowly recedes leaving a nice sticky lace inside the glass – this looks very promising indeed… Korben D., you’re looking like a ripper mate! 9/10.

S: Classic West-Coast hops lend a piney/earthy/citric hop character to the proceedings, not a hop onslaught in the aroma department, but more a balanced affair – with a caramel/biscuit malt base underling the whole operation. Another review of this mentioned apricot, yes I’m definitely getting that as well. Not a fantastic/blow-your-mind DIPA aroma it must be said, but solid enough. 8/10.

T: Flavour profile is a bit more tropical punch hops meet grassy/piney hops party in ones mouth. Yes there is that ever-present apricot note (noticed it in Last Rites Big Smelly Doona), however the overall taste of this DIPA is very much your classic West-Coast DIPA with tropical (some might even say “Pacific”) hop notes. Mid-palate earthy tones, biscuit and caramel malts level out those big hops, with a finish that is balanced and medium bitterness. Also that beefy 8.5% ABV is no where to be seen, covered up by that dynamite sweet/bitter flavour dichotomy, yeah! 9/10.

M: Mid to heavy bodied, rather viscous and laden with hop oils, almost-cloying (but not quite yet) and a super-dense carbonation to round it out = quality stuff. 9/10.

D: Up there with the best Aussie DIPAs (here’s a short list: KAIJU! Aftermath, Green Beacon Uppercut, Last Rites Doona, Angry Reg, Super Hornet, Balter) what Korben lacks in hop freshness, it makes up for in hop-syrupy goodness. Does begin to cloy towards the end of the can, could use a slightly different hop profile, but otherwise this is mint [yeah, I’m bringing back “mint” what of it?]. 8/10.

Food match: I could go a curry right now, lamb Rogan Josh FTW.

Reviewing a two day old bottle (!) - and maybe therein lies some of the problem. Maybe I should have left it a week or two.
Clear amber/gold. 100% clear. Head hangs around - nice lace.
Aromas of apricots, stonefruit. Not a riot, tho... :-(
Taste is of dried apricots, peach, and erm, another note. Stale, dark, unwanted. Can't put my finger on it as i am not a brewer, but I think it's bottling related.
Medium weight as you would want, not oily.
So - to be revisited which is a shame.... I recall a growler of 777 as a highlight of Aus beers.
