16oz pint at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square - it's a bit late in the year to be releasing something like this, but I'm not complaining. Not yet, anyway.
This beer appears a slightly hazy, dark bronzed amber colour, with one finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and somewhat creamy ecru head, which leaves some dissolving ice shelf lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.
It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, a mixed black stone fruitiness, brown sugar syrup, a bit of damp minerality, and some plain earthy, musty, and floral noble hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy caramel malt, bruised apples and pears, a subtle earthy yeastiness, faint hints of dried banana, and more understated leafy, herbal, and floral hoppiness.
The carbonation is average in its palate-satisfying frothiness, the body a decent middleweight, and generally smooth, with perhaps a touch of burgeoning alcohol ingress messing with the ideal here. It finishes trending dry, the malt going all crackery native on me.
Overall - this comes across as a pleasantly serviceable version of the style, easy enough to drink, but not really all that interesting in the end. I wish I had more to say, however, dem's the breaks sometimes, ja?
