BOTTLE: Brown glass. Branded black & white pry-off crown cap. Forgettable label art & design (white and black, with some blue circa the "Oktoberfest-Olut" style designation). 33cl.
Served cold into a pilsner glass at low altitude in Kuopio, Finland. Expectations are average. Reviewed live as an Oktoberfestbier per the label. Purchased at a Prisma supermarket.
4.7% ABV. Best before: 01/06/2015.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: ~1/4 inch wide head. Off-white colour. Okay consistency. It's not frothy enough for a festbier. Retention is poor; this lasts maybe ~20 seconds, leaving no lacing as it recedes.
BODY: Honeyed amber colour of average vibrance. Clean, with no visible yeast particulate or hop sediment. Translucent and transparent.
Overall, it looks decent for a festbier, but neither the head nor the body is great. I see no egregious flaws.
AROMA: Sweet amber malt, a honey-like sweetness, and traces of caramel, with maybe a dab of almond nut in there. Evokes a beer closer to the original festbiers than the contemporary ones - which isn't necessarily a good thing. Between a Vienna lager and a festbier.
Yeast attenuation is a bit low for the style. Suggests a clean straightforward (read: simple) festbier lager with a pleasant but unimpressive flavour profile.
Aromatic intensity is average. Has no hop character or off-notes.
TASTE: Amber malts, a honey-like sweetness, kisses of almond and caramel-ly bready malts. Simple, sure, with a below average yeast attenuation that helps play up the simple yet pleasing amber malt sweetness.
Depth, duration, and intensity of flavour are average. It's a well-balanced albeit simple flavour profile, with a basic no-frills festbier build more in the style of traditional Vienna lager-esque festbiers than more contemporary brews in the style. I like it, but the drinkability is less than what you might expect. Cohesive.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, and light to medium-bodied in classic festbier fashion. Well-carbonated. Adequately hefty and weighty on the palate, yet unrefreshing. Its not the light refreshing crisp festbier lager you'd find at, say, Bergkirchweih, and you wouldn't want to down a litre of it in a festkrug, but this mouthfeel is generally suitable to the style. There isn't a harmony of texture and taste per se, but it's complementary enough methinks.
Not rough, harsh, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, scratchy, or dragging on the palate.
OVERALL: Drinkable enough. As a Finnish stab at a festbier, it's pretty good, and even style purists will find it enjoyable. But it won't impress the discerning drinker, and it does veer quite close to a Vienna lager, making it less approachable in terms of consuming vast quantities - which is kind of the point of a festbier, all things considered. If not for its price point, I'd happily buy it by the 6 pack, and it's one of the better Finnish lagers I've come across. Well worth trying when in Finland, but not a must-have. Certainly worth trying.
