Black IPAs are an unappreciated style, perhaps as Bobby from King of the Hill might put it: "My daddy says that black IPAs are a bastard beer." But still, this is compelling. There's a horse meets barn meets hops meet stout quality to this beer that appeals directly to people like me. When I'm feeling indecisive in the store about whether I want an IPA, a stout, a porter, or do I want some barn-ey Burgundy red instead? This is a great combo of all the things I love about all those libations. So there. Not for everyone, but it's spot on for this drinker. See if you like it. Also reasonable $10 for a sixer of 16 ozers? Yes please.

It pours close to pitch black, lots of off white foam, plenty of lacing.

Big citrus aromas, mostly grapefruit, some roasted malt, light hint of chocolate but that comes and goes.

Taste brings the grapefruit citrus but the roasted malt is more assertive than in the smell. Dark chocolate bitterness isn't as ghostly as in the smell too.

Nice mouthfeel, very nice Black IPA!

Poured into a snifter. Hazy medium brown on the pour - dark in the glass - with a two-finger tan head. Bright grapefruit and pineapple aroma with just a hint of roasted malt. Equally potent citrus flavor with a nice roasty malty backbone. Mainly grapefruit with assertive bitterness. Medium bodied and medium carbed. Very nice black IPA.

 

 

On tap at the tap house and restaurant; poured into a pint glass.
Appearance- nice, shadow black; medium thick beige head that leaves decent lacing.
Smell - a little more coffee and cocoa than hops, but there definitely is some piney and earthy hop notes!
Taste - flavors match what I pick up from the smell, primarily coffee and cocoa, but a nice assortment of pine and earth!
Feel - a smooth drinker with the right amount of balance, boldness and bitterness!
Overall - A bit on the pricey side at the brewery ($6), I'm almost positive that the pint cans are considerably cheaper. I'll look for this one again!

Poured into a tulip a very nice black color, with some very nice carbonation, with a very nice thick/creamy two-finger tan head, which also leaves some pretty nice creamy sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, with some malts, nice little citrus complex (orange, tangerine), some chocolate, slight licorice. The taste is really nice, hoppy, malty, nice little citrus complex (orange, tangerine), chocolate, licorice. Medium body, ABV hidden very well, with a nice little dry/bitter finish. Overall, this is a very tasty brew. Glad to see it still around.

Pours a nice black color, pretty nice carbonation, with a pretty nice one-finger thick/creamy off-white head, which leaves some sticky lacing behind. The nose is hoppy, some malt, licorice. The taste is hoppy, malty, licorice. Medium body. Overall, a pretty tasty brew.

 

From a 16.9 oz can (no date) to a tulip. Reviewed from notes of multiple cans.

A-The beer pours with a tall (almost three finger) mocha-colored head. Retention is good and the foam lasts for more than a few minutes; it leaves nice patches of lacing too. The liquid is opaque and very dark in color, even for a black IPA this stuff is black. Nice.

S-I'm not usually one that must drink my IPAs the moment they are canned, but I did notice a fair amount of change in this beer over the course of two weeks from when I first tried a can to the last can in my pack. At first, the beer was pretty juicy for a Black IPA with lots of orange notes and some tropical flavors too. My last can lost a little bit of the juiciness and picked up more chocolate and cocoa notes, like you might expect from a Black IPA. The hops became more pine-forward and leafy.

T-The taste didn't follow the smell entirely. Even my juicy smelling cans were pretty sharp with a long, earthy pine-forward bitterness on the finish. Less tropical than the smell, the beer makes me think of grapefruit rind. It tastes more like an old school Black IPA.

M-The body is substantial, which is nice on the palate. The beer has a pretty mellow level of carbonation.

O-I am a sucker for Black IPAs and this beer is above average. I was surprised at the change in character over the course of two weeks, but regardless, I would buy more of this.

16 oz can. Pours brown with a creamy frothy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roast black patent malt with lots of fruity piney hops.

The flavor is sweet fruit with lots of roasted malts and piney hops. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a decent black IPA. The fruit and roast kind of clash though.
