Served in a shaker on-tap, October 2012.

I had just visited a local Denver place with a wonderful chile beer, so I was excited to try this one. It looked fantastic in the glass. It was a deep brown, cherry-wood colored with a tall foam of light khaki. Didn't leave too much lacing, but enough to let you know it was there for the party. The smell was really nice. It had the subtle smell of a campfire and the jazzy tingle of a chile pepper distinctly present; maybe a little coffee as well. The flavors and the mouthfeel, however, just kind of fell apart. It was very watery, something I didn't expect. Sometimes, I'm guilty of expecting a Stout body when I drink a Porter, but this was definitely a weak-willed thing in the glass. The flavor was just not there. It felt like it wanted to assert itself, but just got lost. The smoke was still there, and the chile was there, but it was just fading around in there, like a whisp of smoke or a tendril of fabric. Overall, the nose just sets you up for this flavorful wonderfulness and it just splats of not-all-that-much.
