From a 22 oz bottle in a snifter via Jungle Jim's Eastgate. This BEEFY "WOW" brew from
Woodburn----the best micro in Cincinnati bar none, pours a deep opaque with a moderate head of
tan foam that subsides to a thick fine bubbled ring, thin light pool, and shows the drinker some nice
sudsy lacing. Nose of medium light earthy rich malts, coffee, medium strong bourbon, subtle char,
medium oak notes, light vanilla bean notes, and light notes of dark fudge touched with marshmallow.
Of note---let it warm, the nose is absent moderate warmth.
Flavors hit a note that rings true for the style and a tribute to the best brewery in Cincy. Rich dark fudge
overlays notes of marshmallow and light char that is awash in flavors of dark roasted coffee and
vanilla fluff. Oak takes a side stage to the barrel but falls to the mid of the taste with bourbon bringing
up the rear and layered by more oak and subtle light balanced char. Excellent mouth feel; full lightly
slick body, low carbonation, and a warming rich bourbon laced finish that is balanced for such a beast.
To bring it full spectrum, this is a stout I would walk a mile for....or more. Excellent, rich full, and
endearing to the hearts of the lovers of the dark arts.
Woodburn does it right.
PERIOD!
Cheers!

Living up to their namesake, the Cincinnati brewers put their popular imperial stout down for a long slumber in nearby Kentucky bourbon barrels for a silky, nuanced, mature fruit and smoothly roasted session that's much more meant for sipping and savoring.
Their Barrel Aged Imperial Stout pours with the expected lavishly dark, onyx-like austere. Crowned with a simmering slightly tarnish froth, the beer takes on espresso and creme before the fist sip. Bold aromas of dark roast coffee, dark chocolate, whisky spice, sweet oak and savory dark fruits beckon ahead of a bold taste of espresso and toffee that strikes early on the tongue.
The sweetness holds tightly to the tastebuds as the stout embarks upon the middle palate. Bittersweet chocolate, black walnut and caramels continue a coffeehouse latte impression even as the taste of bourbon soaked oak delivers on lighter caramel, vanilla, coconut and even a savory sherry taste. Nutty and woodsy, the bitterness is broad and earthen with coffee. Cherry, blackcurrant and plum round out a complex taste.
Full and decadent in body, the beer's silky smooth finish is like velvet against the tongue. Spicy and sweet with madeira and bourbon, its chocolate and coffee influence extends deep into finish and well into a simmering, lightly smoky aftertaste.
