Cloudy Bay IPA honours the hop breeders of Hop Products Australia by featuring all six hop varieties currently available from Bushy Park Estates that have been developed in HPA's breeding program - Ella, Enigma, Galaxy, Helga, HPA-035 and Summer. As proprietary strains, these hops are grown only by HPA at its two Australian farms, with the largest acreage at Bushy Park Estates in Tasmania. Generous amounts of these rare hops are used in seven separate additions during the brewing process, creating a heady blend of citrus, tropical fruit and herbal aromas. A restrained bitterness allows the earthy tartness of the Bruny Island red wheat to shine through, accentuating the tangy hop flavours.

Purchased at Chas Cole Cellarbrations in Geelong in May 2025 and drunk a week later.

L: A slightly hazy, golden yellow in the glass, with a huge amount of small bubbles rocketing up the glass. The thin head is bright white and frothy, and lacing is left on the glass.

S: The nose is strawberry, peach and guava. I have no idea where the strawberry is coming from, but it's the dominant aroma that I pick up.

T: A smooth and sweet malty base sits under a fruit basket of flavour, with a strawberry note again the dominant profile for me. The wheat is presumably coming to the fore here as this beer is not the usual hops-only IPA experience so common in today's market. Retronasally, I get juicy paw paw, passionfruit and melon and a pleasant lingering bitterness (maybe it's the passionfruit I'm parsing as strawberry?). Whatever drives the smooth malt base and the strawberry and melon hop profile, it's doing a bloody good job. This is a delicious beer!

M: The mouthfeel is quite smooth and soft, with low carbonation. I'm getting through the beer far quicker than I should, and the mouthfeel is making it even easier than it should be.

O: Two words: outstanding beer!

Cheers!
