I added this limited edition beer and it was a struggle to categorize it as it says “Barrel aged blend” on the nicely designed 330 ml can and this was all the information available online at the time of this review:
“ An amalgamation of unaged Imperial Stout.
Imperial Stout aged in bourbon, red ale aged in Irish peated Single Malt whiskey and an Oatmeal Stout in ex 15 year old Irish Single Malt and Cognac. Rounded, bold and lush. “
So take your pick, good luck... Anyway, here it goes:
Top: barely makes an inch of light tan head which disappears in literally 10 seconds with fizzy sounds. No lacing. Don’t like this look at all.
Colour: murky dark brown/deep ruby.
Smell: something sweet, some red wine, some dried stone fruits. Not too intense, but interesting. Actually it’s nice, but not beer-like.
Taste: medium body, med- carbonation with microbubbles. Champagne feel. Little sourness. Oak. Tones of sweet red wine, hints of dried stone fruits, dried figs(?), some wine and whiskey barrel bitterness after the sip. Good warmth from the alcohol. Maybe a hint of smoked malts and Cognac somewhere far behind all.
Sweet/ semi-sweet finish with a moderate spicy aftertaste.
Summary: meh, what do I do with this? It’s expensive (@6.50€ for 330 ml), but lacks the body for a 10.2% ABV beer. Does not remind me of any of the listed ingredients, or in fact, even of a beer. It’s interesting as an experience, reminds me of a fizzy mulled wine, fizzy sangria. But those are dirt cheap compared to this. You will drink it, because it’s not a bad something per se, but no mas. Hard pass.
