Special #20
Imperial vanilla stout Jamaican Rum Oak Aged
APPEARANCE: Clear dark brown pour yields a two finger, medium, slightly looser looking, foamy tan head with great retention. Black body with piles of carbonation everywhere on this one. Head isn’t going anywhere. Head eventually settles into a full, foamy cap and coats the sides of the glass. A light wisp remains leaving touches of lacing on the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Milder nose of vanilla, some oak aromas, light milk chocolate and some rum notes.
TASTE: Lightly roasted with hints of wood and rum up front. Some vanilla and booze at the swallow, then a decent finish of lightly roasted malts, some milk chocolate, definite vanilla, some rum and wood flavors, as well as some spicy alcohol as well.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Soft and creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. A touch of heat lingers.
OVERALL: Not bad. It’s the same as the bourbon version but with bourbon soaked oak instead. The carbonation is a little crazy at the get go, but it calms rather nicely. Nose is a touch mild but the flavor works fine. A solid beer with a wood aged quality but not a barrel aged character, if that makes any sense. Not something I’d have to jump at again, but certainly worth checking out if you’re a fan of the brewery. Cheers!
