Special #20
Imperial Vanilla Stout Bourbon Oak Aged
APPEARANCE: Clear dark brown pour yields a two finger, medium, slightly looser looking, foamy tan head with great retention. Black body with piles of carbonation everywhere on this one. Head isn’t going anywhere. It’s actually slowly growing out of the glass. Head eventually settles into a full, foamy cap and coats the sides of the glass. A light wisp remains leaving touches of lacing on the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Slightly bolder nose than the rum version, with vanilla, some oak aromas, light milk chocolate and some bourbon notes.
TASTE: Lightly roasted with hints of wood and rum up front. Some vanilla and booze at the swallow, then a decent finish of lightly roasted malts, some milk chocolate, definite vanilla, some bourbon and wood flavors, as well as some booze
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Soft and creamy on the palate, goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. A touch of heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is exactly the same as the rum version, which is not a surprise. As far as I can tell, it’s the same batch split in two. Again, crazy carbonation and a more mild nose than usual. Still, this is a solid effort and an enjoyable brew. I like the bourbon quality more than the rum; it’s got more of the sweet spirit as opposed to the spicy booze. Check it out if you get the chance. Cheers!
