Got this from the cheese shop in Maarssen
From a 33cl can into a snifter
IBU: 55
EBC: 200
APPEARANCE: Pours out clear dark brown, almost black, and yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, slightly foamy, light brown head with excellent retention. Black body with higher levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full, foamy cap leaving some frothy lacing on the glass. Solid wisp remains leaving lots of sticky lacing on the glass as it empties. A little lighter in color but this is still a good looking stout.
SMELL: Nice maple syrup aromas for sure, with plenty of character from the base stout. Lightly roasted malts, some dark fruits, notes of brown sugar and tobacco aromas on the nose.
TASTE: Maple flavors, with plenty of base stout, just like the base beer. Lightly roasted, but mostly burnt malts, some tobacco, dark fruits and some alcohol at the swallow. Bolder finish of tobacco, ashy flavors, burnt malts, some bitter hops, and some nice, sweet maple flavors as well. A touch of booze lingers on the palate as well. Good stuff.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate, smooth enough, goes down smooth and finishes a bit mouth-coating. Some bitterness lingers. Not quite as full and creamy as the base stout.
OVERALL: This is really nice. It’s just as solid as the base stout, though the feel might be a little less impressive, but the nose and flavor is really good. The maple addition adds a nice layer of sweetness on top of an already solid base stout. Well worth checking out if you get the chance. Definitely worth a few if you’re a maple stout fan. Cheers!
