L- Superficially black but with a haolgen torch behind it's revealed as ultra-dark ruby red, poured clear with 2mm deep tan head.
S- Mild toasty porter notes
T- Dryer than anticipated, right on the front, this is both notably toasty and smokey. There is a really deeply roasted aspect here, far more so in other porter around 5.0% (per my can).
F- A danger with such a prominent taste is that at a modest 5.0% the Feel then seems thin in comparison. This one (IMHO) is nearing that line.
O- A pungent beer with a relatively tame ABV%. For people who favour BIG taste this might even be sessionable! I see that it's smoked over cherry wood but I'm relieved to say this isn't a cherry-bomb, in fact I don't sense a cherry fruit note at all. Fascinating to try, as well as it's done it might be a bit too far away from my more regular styles to buy again.
440ml can BB: 14/12/2021 £3.30 Bought from TremblingMadness/York as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.
-p.s. Tasted blind, I've read no notes on can or reviews below. Now the fun bit, reading the can and seeing what I missed! Brewed with barley + oats, un-pasteurised, un-filtered.

A 330ml can with a BB of March 2018. Acquired a little while back from ASDA. The label describes it as a smoked porter brewed with 6 malts and named after York's viking heritage.
A: Poured into a tulip. A very dark brown hue that appears virtually black in the glass. Yields a large head of creamy light brown foam that lasts for a minute or two before reducing to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of dark, smoky malt with hints of roasted grain, molasses, coffee, mild brown sugar, ale yeast, subtle wood and faint stewed leaves. Nice complexity - pretty good.
T: Tastes of smoky roasted malt with notes of burnt grain, coffee, mild molasses, woodsmoke, ale yeast and faint stewed leaves. Slightly sweet, followed by a restrained, malt-driven bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly, with soft carbonation and a somewhat insubstantial body for the style. Could certainly be thicker. Aftertaste of smoky malt, roasted grain, molasses, ale yeast and stewed leaves.
O: A tasty brew that could stand a little improvement. Looks OK; shame about the head retention. Aroma and flavour are a satisfying blend of dark, smoky malt underpinned with subtle sweetness and yeast notes. So-so body; a bit too watery. Goes down readily enough - worth sampling if smoked beer is your thing.

Brought back from York by a friend for my home collection, from a newly founded brewpub in the city. Pours a black colour with a beige foamy head that lasts. Aromas of roast coffee. Tastes of roasted coffee, chocolate, vanilla, apple & hints of smoked toffee. Aftertaste has hints of smoked toffee & roast coffee bitterness.
