A 330ml can with a BB of Feb 2019. Purchased recently from Trembling Madness in York. Brewed for York's annual Jorvik Viking Festival, the label describes this as a Sahti-inspired session ale. Ingredients include rye, juniper, rosemary and fennel. Named after the saga that occurred following the death of Ragnar Lothbrok, when the Great Heathen Army invaded England.
A: Poured into a tulip. Can-conditioned. A deep, hazy coppery-brown hue with plentiful suspended sediment and light carbonation. Yields a large head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of blended herbs with hints of juniper, mild fennel, a twinge of rosemary, spice, earthy yeast, banana, fruity esters, caramel malt, a touch of rye and subtle bread. Vaguely sweet overtones, but pleasantly balanced.
T: Tastes of understated aromatic herbs with notes of juniper, fennel, mild rosemary, subtle spice, earthy yeast, fruity esters, caramel malt, grain, a hint of rye and vague bread. Harsh leafiness in the background. Slightly sweet, followed by a delicate bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly tingly, with soft carbonation and a thin, watery body. Could certainly do with enhanced texture. Aftertaste of juniper, herbs, earthy yeast, esters and faint grainy malt.
O: An interesting effort that falls short of perfection. Looks pretty good, while the aroma and flavour are a mix of herbal notes, earthy yeast and grainy malt. The aroma achieves better balance; the flavour lacks impact from the malt. Body is rather insubstantial. Drinkable and refreshing, but the mouthfeel could be better. Not sure if this will become an annual feature, but worth trying if you like herbs in your beer.
