Russian Imperial Stouts are one of brewmaster Brad Clark’s favorite styles of beer and Dark Apparition is without a doubt his favorite beer to brew. We stuff 2200 pounds of malt into our 20bbl mash tun and by the end of the mash, dark malts are spilling onto the brew house floor! Brad includes great flavors he admires in his favorite Russian Imperial Stouts like chocolate, coffee, roast, dark fruit, caramel, and some nice earthy/spicy hop character. With a midnight black color and chewy, dextrinous body, Dark Apparition is a huge beer with tons of character.

Black liquid, deep tan inch and half head that slowly recedes to a thick layer of foam and finally a thin sheen of the remaining bubbles waiting for their turn to lace the glass. Fragrant chocolate malt aromas that builds the anticipation of the first sip.
Thick black taste with dark malts throughout. Smooth with Pleasant Boozy aftertones.
Very nicely executed especially at a strong 10%.

One of my favorite imperial stouts, haven't seen this one in my area since 2019, glad to see this again. Canned 10/20/25. The can has an ABV listed as 10%, but I remember this being 10.5% in the past. Poured into a Spiegelau beer tulip at around cellar temperature.

Black with a one inch light brown head that eventually disappears. Sheets and webs of lacing remain on the glass during the drinkdown.

Aromas of dark roasted malts, coffee and chocolate, some sweetness comes through.

Tastes of rich dark chocolate, roasted malt, some coffee notes. There is pleasant sweetness of brown sugar that works well in combination with the dark chocolate notes. A nice bitterness is there that is not too intense, just right to balance the sweetness of the malts. A lingering finish of mild bitterness, dark chocolate and malt roast.

Medium to full body. slightly viscous but not syrupy at all.

This is about as good as one can get for this style. Recommended for anyone who enjoys a good RIS.

Poured from a 12 oz can bought in Ohio.

A beautiful stout in my snifter. Dark as midnight, with a massive, creamy, tan head. Aromas of bitter espresso and burnt grain. Rich flavors of darkly roasted grains and bitter coffee; these are softened by chocolate notes, along with brandy-like alcohol in the finish. Thick, silky, creamy body leads to an off-dry finish. High bitterness, but it does not stand out against the richness of the other sensations. Alcohol seems lower than it is listed to be.

I am truly impressed by this beer. It is everything a RIS should be.

Copenhagen 23/6 2023. 35,5 cl can from Kihoskh, Sønder Boulevard, Kbh. V. Black can with a rough drawing of a grisly old man.

Pours opaque dark brown with a mid-sized beige head. Stable. Settles as thin but unbroken layer of foam covering the surface of the beer. Moderate lacing.

Aroma is fairly intense with sweet dark odor mingling with a a scent of dark alcohol. Toffee and brown sugar. Licorice. Black coffee and a bit of brandy.

Light carbonation. Thick, oily, soft, a bit viscous, kind of flat texture.

Flavor is rather intense with a strong sweetness followed by a moderately strong bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet with dark boozy twist. Lingers for a while. Finish is semi-dry and laced in toffee.

Potent and fairly pleasant.

The pour is jet black with tan & frothy head of foam. The moutnhfeel is thick & chewy & the body is medium to full. The taste is chewy roasted malt, burnt brown bread crust, dark chocolate, coffee, prunes, & hint of tobacco char. In general, this was an excellent stout, highly recommended from one of my favorite Ohio brewers. Cheers! A (World Class)

6 oz draft pour at Lures Bar & Grille. Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Decent retention and lacing. Aroma and flavor feature dark roasted malts, bittersweet chocolate, coffee and vanilla, caramel, dark fruit, and a whiff of earthy/bitter hops. Mouthfeel has average body and hides the abv fairly well. Overall it's a complex, flavorful, and solidly above-average RIS.

Draft pour a Liquiderie Bar

Dark brown but no black, off tan head, leaves a bit of lacing.

Smell is coffee, chocolate, roast, slight dark fruit. Very nice.

Taste is the same

Slight bitterness but very light for the style. Rather thin, but at 10.7% it's expected, and somehow feels nice for this one. Skeena liked it.
