Brewed with our dear friend Brett Smith of Branch & Bone Artisan Ales, this Imperial Stout was brewed with heaps of rye and chocolate malt, and then aged patiently in Bourbon casks for 19 months. Allow to warm slightly to reveal notes of baker’s chocolate, brownie batter, and danish rye bread.

A wonderful beer for barrel aged stout fans who like rye. A sipper as it’s a powerful beer at 14.6% ABV. I’ll add that this stout significantly obscures the barrel.

12.7 ounce bottle. This gem pours dark as motor oil. Mouthfeel is decadent without being cloying. Almost buttery. Little head and virtually no lacing. Carbonation is mild at best.

The nose is rye and chocolate malts partnered with the bourbon barrel. I’d buy an air freshener made like this beer. The taste follow the nose and the rye takes a half-step back as the barrel moves up. Decadent. 19 months in bourbon casks worked their magic. I’ll be seeking this out again.

Look - Black thick slight tan read but really nice rimming and lacing
Smell - Chocolate brownies with some rye and a ton of bourbon barrel
Taste - boozy with a ton of chocolate caramel rye and a lot of barrel
Feel - medium full body with a medium light slight crisp carbonation
Overall - really nice non-adjunct rye stout with great chocolate and barrel taste

Pours dark brown and moderately thin, less viscous than expected from a Jackie O's BA stout of this ABV, with no head to be found. Plenty of rye character on the nose, with lots of chocolate Cadbury Flake. The rye spice also suggests some herbal botanicals. Dates, dark roasted grains, and a tannic dryness on the finish. Thin mouthfeel with light carbonation.

We continue the winter with another warming offering from Jackie O’s in the form of Pyrography. The stout was put to sleep for almost 2 years and that is quite a long time from these guys. It is a rye stout that uses bourbon barrels for aging so you get the best of both worlds. They mix in perfect harmony, bite/heat from the base and sweet/smooth from the barrel. There is a definitive dryness to the finish which I’m guessing is from the rye addition. Body is thin and expected with such an aged stout. Excellent idea of combining two worlds and it was nicely executed.

After Autumn weather is finally here I decided to celebrate with this beast. The pour out of a 12.7 ounce bottle produced a dark brownish black body with a small head. Smell is complex but I can't detect any rye notes, or maybe I just don't what to concentrate on. Plenty of booze, chocolate and brown sugar though. Taste adds licorice to the mix, particularly before it warmed some. Mouthfeel was nicely thick.

This wasn't mentioned in the stats but this was a collab with Branch & Bone Artisan Ales of Dayton. As with most of their one offs, I really wish this was in regular rotation.

Obsidian black, almost seeming still and carbless to start, it takes a while to build a thin, fine tan blanket that quickly dissipates to a skinny chain.

The nose is very BORIS--savory and nutty with dampened and wafery oak--very much unlike Jackie O's. And just by the smell, this has got to be a thick brew...

...and yep, it's thick, full and round, cut by a fine then softening carbonation the recedes into a numbing, semi-sticky finish that warms on the swallow.

The palate adds some spiced dark fruit, mostly date, while hints of barrel char emerge with time. But it's also quite roasty and savory for JO, even a bit grainy and oaty, albeit with a unique earthy spice. With time, the exhale brings more spice, which increases the sharp bitterness that potently contrasts the round, fluidly decadent body. Hints of maple and molasses develop as it warms.

From the 12.7 fl oz bottle in a snifter. This excellent brew pours a rich
and murky blackish brown with a modest head of khaki foam that
sizzles to a thin ring. Nose of bourbon, vanilla, spicy rye, dark cocoa,
astringent booze. Flavors nail it! Dark cocoa, dark espresso, dark fruit,
rich char, brulee, hefty bourbon, and earthy malt undertones. Excellent
mouth feel; full body, rich, coating, low carbonation, moderately slick,
smooth, warming, and finishing medium dry to dry with a bitter malt
and warming booze finish.

Overall----EXCELLENT!
