This is actually known as Dark Apparition - Nano Rye according to Brad at Jackie O's. Served in a Portsmouth tulip. Thanks to Sean for procuring this one.
A - Pours with minimal carbonation, a thin ring of bubbles, pitch black body. Somewhat ominous looking.
S - Smell is very nice, with plenty of earthy grains, rye, whiskey, and as it warms up more oak character. The base beer imparts chocolate, figs and dates, and burnt sugars. There's a hint of solvent alcohol as it nears room temperature, but it's reasonably well-hidden.
T - Taste displays some oxidation, but is otherwise heavy in sweet malts and chocolates, with the whiskey character moving to the periphery and the barrel imparting large quantities of butterscotch.
M - Pretty much still. Oily, slick, full-bodied, with some alcohol warmth, and a surprisingly dry, roasty finish. Could use some more bubbles.
D - It took me a while to work through 6oz. Even though I don't mind low carbonation stouts and barleywines, this needs a bit more spritz to surpass cordial sipper status.

A - Pours black, ever-so-slight touch of head, but basically like motor oil. No lacing, retention, or anything else going on. Lots of blackness.
S - Huge sweet chocolate, burnt sugars, caramel, booze. Lots of sweetness and booze (in a good way). Very rich and decadent.
T - Chocolate, dark fruits, some oxidation in there, slight musty notes, some rye notes in there, oak. Not quite as rich as the nose, and the slight oxidation/must hurt the overall flavors. Astringent harsh finish.
M - Full, rich and viscous, no carbonation, creamy finish.
D - Seems a bit past its prime with some must and oxidation in there. The nose is excellent and rich, but the taste isn't quite as good anymore. Can't recommend, but hey, if there's a bottle of this stuff in front of you, give it a try.

12oz bottle, compared against the bourbon barrel and base versions.
pours opaque black with a few very fine brown bubbles of head. no lace.
aroma is great. bourbon and vanilla. rye. dark chocolate. whole wheat bread and biscuit. cracker. light alcohol. caramel and toffee. a bit earthy.
taste is excellent. much like the aroma, but the taste is more distinctly rye with just a hint of bourbony character. dark and bittersweet chocolate. bit of orange and tangerine. just above low bitterness level, and it feels more like chocolate than hops. great depth and complexity.
mouthfeel is great. nice big body. medium carbonation level.
drinkability is good. good balance with the barrel. a touch of booze unbalancing the base. good complexity.
