Brewed in the English barleywine tradition and aged in bourbon barrels for 19 months, Horchata Bourbon Barrel Brick Kiln’s treatment on heaps of adjuncts lends tremendous notes of its namesake beverage along side rich notes of toffee and marzipan. Extended aging in bourbon barrels adds deep notes of vanilla and oak to the beer, named in tribute to the Southeast Ohio brick industry. The kilns of Athens Brick Company, established in 1890, once operated down the street from our current production brewery.

Poured from the brewery’s familiar 12.7% bottle, poured is a dark black body with a momentary head that quickly disappears. No lacing.
Nose is sweet bourbon barrel, light cinnamon and dark fruit.
Taste follows nose and adds wee bits of oak and vanilla. The barrel is present and taste is sweet but not hot. The ABV is well masked. Finish is luxurious and the oak meshes well with the barrel here.
Mouthfeel is good: a bit sticky but soft and smooth with light carbonation.
A good barleywine that just misses the mark given the horchata designation. A bit too subtle on those flavors. Nonetheless an easy drinking delicious barleywine.

Look - super dark brown with initial rimming and head that goes away quick.
Smell - almond, brown sugar, cinnamon, caramel and vanilla.
Taste - all the same notes as the smell, sweet and definitely has the barrel taste that I didn't really pick up in the smell other than the caramel.
Feel - Full body with a lighter carb, slight creamy.
Overall - I like how it's not over adjuncted but still gives it that horchata taste. Pretty solid

Poured at fridge temp. Poured black with little head. The nose is pretty nut forward. Almonds for sure. Can't say I know what tiger nuts smell like. Chocolate, cinnamon, slight barrel, slight brown sugar, dark bread, and some caramel. Really nice.
The tastes did not quite meet my expectations based on the nose. It doesn't come across as balanced as it could be. The nuts are still pretty dominant, but there is a mild sweetness. There is an earthy compost taste, along with a mix of cinnamon and vanilla. Maple and bread come through as well.
Mouthfeel is pretty thick and creamy. Pretty good, but not my favorite taste. Glad I got to try it!

As usual with Jackie O's barleywines, the head was very short lived. Not worried about that though, I always love their mouthfeel. Gently carbonated and sticky, perfect for the style.
The aroma is pretty enticing, getting some of the caramel and brown sugar from base beer plus well incorporated cinnamon and vanilla. Plenty of pleasant booze as well. I can't say I discern any nuts.
This tastes fine but falls a bit short of the aroma. While this type of barleywine is not in my wheelhouse it is better than other similar examples I've tried. The vanilla is nice and mellow and the bourbon is lovely while the nuts are a very faint trace of roast. For my taste, the cinnamon comes on too strong. It is easily the single most prominent feature. The barleywine underneath it all is hard to find. Good for what is, I'm glad I tried it, and I don't need another.
