look: big bubbly tan coloured head with good retention, beer is jet black in the glass, totally opaque,
smell: very rich malt aromas, black bread, really meaty, some treacle and molasses, tobacco, caramel, some nice dark fruit aromas, lot of fig, hint of cherry, espresso, dark chocolate, oaky, a hint of hazelnut, most inviting.
taste: not quite as good as the aroma had led me to think it would be but nice enough, malt dominated, black bread, pumpernickel bread, really meaty, unami flavours, really oaky and earthy, not that sweet but there is sweetness there, molasses and treacle and caramel, tobacco, big bitterness on the finish, smokey rich malt flavours linger, nice.
feel: medium bodied, light carbonation, bit thin, lacking in body big time for a strong stout like this, lingering bitterness on the back of the tongue, quite drinkable all the same, hint of alcohol warming.
overall: i got very excited for a moment but proceeded to be let down, oh well, another decent LE beer from Hope.
