This is a sweeter, stronger take on the regular Elevator Doppelbock....lets see what we have here!
A- Pours without much fanfare in terms of foamy head or carbonation....reminds me of a Japanese flat beer I enjoyed not too long ago. The coloration is more of a hazy rustic brown shade, with some reddish hues when held up against the light. To go alongside the very mild looking carbonation, the lacing is equally as sleepy, with really nothing sticking to the inside of my glass. So, overall the look of this is nothing to get excited about but thats not always what its' about!
S- Sweet Sherry cask....warm, boozy and full of charred wood! After this initial whiff of powerful fortified wine and barrel, there are more traditional big time malt, toffee, cooked brown sugars, sweet alcohols, root beer, and woodsy Earth on the finish....very nice!
T- Beautiful sweet sherry, and warming booze make up the gist of the flavor on the palate here. Wood cask, slight char, caramel, molassess, slight nuttiness, and a sweet, sticky finish that is of dried cherries, chocolate, brown malts. This is a sweet, flavorful and robustly flavored doppelbock!
M/O- Medium to full bodied and with the carbonation is very mellow, really allowing the full sticky flavors coat the palate in slow moving fashion. The drinkability is good, but more than one bottle of this would be more than I would want in a sitting. Would pair well with a sticky toffee pudding or some sort of chocolatey dessert. A fine beer and I love these variants on the elevator series. Good job Hells Basement!
