650ml bottle poured into pint glass. From notes.

Pours black with a thin cap of tan head that leaves sparse rocky lace as it recedes.

Smells of creamed coffee, caramel, cocoa powder, licorice, burned wood and earthy herbal hops.

Tastes of more creamy coffee, singed caramel, bittersweet chocolate, licorice candy and more mild earthy hops.

Feels soft and creamy, Medium bodied with airy carbonation. Finishes dry.

Verdict: Recommended. A nice mild dessert of a beer.

Bomber poured into an English pub glass. A dark brown color with some near-reddish highlights (porter-like) and a half-finger of sudsy tan foam.

Aroma of milk chocolate, coffee beans, molasses, a hint of vanilla. More roasted than sweet although the latter is unambiguous. Taste is an initial hit of chocolate malt balls followed by a dark roast coffee element (almost burnt). The latter comes to dominate the palate and the more expected malt sweetness gets muddled. I am also getting some of the molasses notes from the nose.

Body is on the thin side and lacks the expected creamy smoothness. Mellow carbonation. Finishes somewhat chalky, tepid, with a faint ghost of earthy hops. The mouthfeel is flatly wrong for the style and overall this is conveying a more conventional American stout flair. Some merit to be found in the malt flavors.

Pouts dark brown with tan head that leaves some lacing.

Nose has chocolate, coffee, malt.

Taste follows nose. A slightly bitter and dry finish.

Truly excellent.

700th review.

Appearance - Pours a dark cola brown with a finger of foamy tan head.

Smell - roasted malts, cocoa, hint of coffee, lactose, hint of earthy hops.

Taste - The roasted malts start this off followed by a pungent hit from the cocoa, hint of coffee bean, and moderately bitter earthy hops. The lactose is somewhat distant in the taste and the taste is predominately more bitter than the aromas would suggest.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Finishes dry with a lingering bitterness from the cocoa and the coffee bean.

Overall - A one sided stout from Yukon. I wish the lactose was a little more predominate in this one to make it more true to the style. The bitter flavours of the cocoa and coffee bean take precedence in this brew. Some minor adjustments to this would make this a stand out.

A 16oz glass at Beer Revolution in downtown YEG.

This beer appears a clear, rather dark ruby-tinted russet brown hue, with one skinny finger of loosely foamy, weakly frothy beige head, which leaves a bit of stringy tree branch lace around the glass as things evenly subside.

It smells of faintly roasted bready caramel, a slightly sour lactic sweetness, some pear and apple fruity tartness, a touch of mild char, faint dry cocoa notes, equally tame coffee grounds, and further leafy, earthy hops. The taste is sour red fruit, bittersweet chocolate, toasted caramel malt, middling dry coffee notes, edgy anise, more acrid, somewhat stale milk, and fading earthy, weedy hops.

The carbonation is moderate in its zingy, lightly fizzy bearing, the body a slightly clammy medium weight, and otherwise basically smooth and creamy. It finishes just off-dry, the slightly spoiled milk, cocoa, and rather acerbic fruitiness holding court.

A rather dry, and one-sided version of the style, one you don't normally come across - the tart character almost overwhelming by the end. Still, a flavourful offering, the usual suspects all putting in a full work day here. A bit of a guerrilla release, at least here in Alberta.
