16oz glass at Beer Revolution YEG Oliver Square. A so-called pilot brew - wow, this is the first that I've seen of a brewery pawning its quality control on drinkers outside of their control. Okay, then.
This beer appears a clear, dark orange-brick highlighted brown colour, with one finger of puffy, loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves some crackling electrical resistance lace around the glass as it slowly but surely sinks away.
It smells of bready and doughy caramel malt, some mixed black orchard fruitiness, a bit of wispy smoke, subtle day-old coffee, and very tame earthy, leafy, and floral hop bitters. The taste is grainy and doughy caramel malt, some plum and raisin fruity notes, creamy cafe-au-lait, more free-range char, and a laid-back earthy, weedy, and musty hoppiness.
The carbonation is quite gentle in its wan frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and mostly smooth, just a hint of smokiness making me think just a little too much right now. It finishes well off-dry, very malty and fruity - natch.
Overall, this Baltic Porter comes across as kind of underwhelming, not in its flavour, but in its lack of fullness and more, um, robust elevated wowee sauce measure. Maybe tweak it a bit more before releasing it to the general public, is all I can say.
