Slightly hazy copper beer with thick golden head, nice retention.
Smell - dirty, stale, caramel, toffee, wet hay, some hops.
Taste - not so much of caramel & floral tones, tends to bitter hop side, that overwhelms.
Light body, soft carbonation.
Average specimen.

Can. Brewed by Stones (Berlin). Dark amber. Thick dense head which dissipates quite quickly.
Sweet hop and caramel malt aroma.
Tastes similar but better than the aroma. Light astringency.
Well carbonated but nevertheless quite soft.
Nothing to be arrogant about.

330ml Can from Brewdog.com (£1.61):
My first beer from Stone's Berlin outpost & a fairly average one on the whole; it got off to quite a good start with plenty of sweet malts & caramel flavours coming through on the nose but by the time it got to the taste these had faded a little more than I'd have liked & the beer suffered as a direct result. It was a clean & easy to drink beer, the dark fruits with the nose were quite enjoyable too but not enough of the good notes seemed to carry over to the taste & by the end of this one it had begun to turn into a struggle meaning it's not likely I'll pick this one up again.

The colour is deep red, the liquid is clear. The three finger head is beige, compact and firm. It sinks very slowly leaving some lacing.

The smell is smooth with hints of red wine, beef stock and herbs.

The taste is quite bitter and dry. Growing spicy notes, some herbs and citric peels. Malty flavours of brown bread and cookies. Light to medium body. The aftertaste got growing bitterness, passing hints of beef stock, rye crispbread and bitter herbs. The finish is smooth and sweet with clean bitterness and some spices (cinnamon and nutmeg).

The carbonation is medium strong, the mid-sized bubbles are smooth and long-lived. The liquid is somewhat harsh.

A pleasant, balanced and quite complex beer given the alcohol level.

Pours a reddish brown, with a bit of white foam.

The smell is malty and a bit sweet, with some hints of rye.

The taste starts of bready, with a nice chunk to it, but then becomes very, very bitter. The bitterness doesn't quite feel natural, but a bit artificial. It kind of kills the balance, and also drinkability that the first taste hints at.

Mouthfeel is light, but a bit oily, with light carbonation.

I think the overdone bitterness lets this beer down. Instead of trying to be a Bastard, I think they should have made it a bit more mellow. It's decent, but the bitterness makes me hesitant about having another.
