Notes via stream of consciousness: Very cloudy, perhaps even more so than a hefeweizen. Similar orange and gold color as well. Finger-thick head of frothy white foam. It's honestly not that good to look at, but that's the style and the aroma more than makes up for it. It's like sticking your head into a big bag of fresh hops. It's floral, fruity with citrus/orange, a bit piney and earthy and hoppy - as in actual hops with hop resins, and a little bit of plant matter. I'm pretty excited to taste it now... and I see where that hoppiness is coming from, it's in the flavor as well, although oddly, the citrusy and floral character is more restrained. I get a little more pine and earthy spiciness. It's still good even though the fruitiness isn't as big as the aroma might have suggested it would be, and it's interesting because it's different and unusual. I get almost a minty note at the back of the mouth from it. Looking back, the head has died down but it's left some very nice walls of solid lacing behind. The label lists 37 IBUS but it doesn't seem like it. Ah, I just poured out the rest of it and I got bits of yeast floating around. And I just got a hop burp that was quite spicy and piney. If I hold the glass up to the light particulate is clearly visible resting at the base of the glass. Wow, they've really hit a home run with this one, at least for people who love the new super hoppy beers. In the mouth it's medium bodied but leaning slightly towards medium-light, and gently crisp and effervescent. Now when I smell it I get much more of the pine, a little bit of the floral, and just a touch of the citrus. Interesting how beers change as you get used to certain aspects of them. It also seems much more resinous in the finish now. It's giving me a bit more bitterness now as well as it builds on my palate. Ah, I just looked at the label now and it says it's brewed with "SIMCOE LUPULIN POWDER" and I wonder if that makes a difference as it really does seem like super fresh hops. So, OK, they've won me over. I'd planned to stop by their tasting room last weekend but didn't get the chance because they open later (3 I think) so now I'll have to put out a little more effort as I'm expecting great things. For fans of super hoppy beers this one is well worth seeking out.
