Notes via stream of consciousness: "India Pale Ale Brewed with Rye Malt, Centennial and Amarillo Hops". It's much cloudier than I thought it would be. It's a deep amber, almost brown, with golden highlights at the base of the glass. The head is a tall cap of yellowed off-white foam. There are big bubbles as well as plenty of very fine bubbles in the head which is a good sign that it's been well brewed. The aroma is limited for an IPA and I'm not getting much of anything beyond some yeasty orchard-fruit notes, some lightly floral notes, a very softly citrusy edge, and a dusting of mild pine. It has the smell of an amber beer but no particular hop notes really stand out. On to the flavor then... that's much better. It's malty and the rye is clear, and then a note of orange appears before it fades back into spicy rye malt at the dry finish. There's apple in the finish as well, and I'm guessing the whole way through although it didn't stand out to me until just now. So... I get the Amarillo, that's what's giving us the orange note, but what were the other hops? Oh, just Centennial, OK, that makes sense. They're softly floral and citrusy but in a kind of generic way, and lightly piney - I get all of that. They'd appear brighter in a more golden beer but the grainy rye and gently caramelish malts block them to some extent here. The spiciness of the rye is probably its brightest point, and that helps to dry it in the finish a bit. It's gently sweetish, and lightly caramelish, and not really that bitter for an IPA. I guess it gets that tag for the 7% ABV. Looking back, the head retention was very good and there are solid rings of lacing about the glass. In the mouth it's medium bodied and gently crisp. In the end I really like this. It's an easy choice as it's just like an amped up amber ale. I could probably drink a 6-pack of these out with the lads, although I'd probably get bored with it after the second one but if that's all you've got I wouldn't have a problem with those last 4. Allowing for the cloudiness as that seems to be the thing these days it scores fairly well.
