Eight & Sand Beer Co. "Cocoa Brass Pounder"
1 Pint can with only a partial canned on date
$4.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: This is Eight & Sands Brass Pounder English style mild ale with added cocoa nibs. I've never tasted the Brass Pounder so I'm at a little bit of a disadvantage here. It's a hazy dark brown in color beneath a pillowy head of fine-bubbled off-white foam. The aroma is delicately fruity and subtly cocoaish. The flavor delivers a light maltiness with touches of chocolate and caramel as well as the promised cocoa although it's very delicate. It's somewhat acidic which is a little bit of a problem, and could probably have been fixed as there's not a whole lot of dark malt going on here. Along with that it has a median bitterness that leaves it dry in the finish with some leafy and tea-like hops lingering. It's light in body with a zesty and effervescent carbonation that doesn't really fit the style but I understand that it's a canned product and not much can be done about it. I simply poured it from one glass into another to release some of the carbonation and it was better with a smoother feel. I'm glad that they didn't over do the cocoa nibs as that would have thrown it off with such a delicate maltiness, and although the cocoa is very light it does add an extra touch of complexity.
