Poured from growler into a tulip. This is their standard Impedance porter, aged on Ship Rock Distillers rum barrels.
Appearance: rich, extremely dark brown hue with plenty of haze and a finger of frothy tan foam atop. It looks good!
Smell: sweet with notes of chocolate and roast layered with dark fruits: date, plum and a little cherry character. There's a little booziness but mostly the aroma just smells of a lovely dessert.
Taste: roasty up front with some lightly boozy fruit flavors. I get a little bit of barrel, along with dates, coffee and a little dusty tobacco. The flavor complexity is really very good here. Wonderful.
Mouthfeel: this is this beer's big failing; it's got simply too thin a body and not enough carbonation. If this thing were fully creamy, it would be so delicious.
Overall: I would have loved a little more body and texture to this thing; however, the flavors are great and I'm very much enjoying it.
