07/18/23.

A: Not so clear gold hue with 1-2 finger white frothy head with good retention and solid lacing.

S: Sweet cereal grain with lemon noble hop

T: The cereal graininess is overwhelming and dominates the flavor profile. The cereal grain has a sweet breakfast cereal character that seems out of place for the style. Bitterness is low and the hop flavor is minimal.

M: Not as light as I expected for 4.4% ABV lager and really not too crisp or dry either.

O: Not a particularly good version of a craft Pilsner.

I love this local brewery, Southern Range, offering. Looks and pours great and tastes even better! I’m a big supporter of small, independent breweries and Carolina Pilsner is one of my favorites. I’m not given to flowery descriptions but this beer is smooth and very pleasing to my palate. My only wish is for a lower carb version. A little pricey in the 4-pak but worth it IMHO. I will always support the “little guy” in such a vast market!

Pours a med fizzy head, med retention, hazy pale orange color

Nose light malt, weird fruity lemony thing, cracker cereal, fruity pebbles, fruity tart

Taste more cereal like fruity pebbles kids cereal, cracker dough, mild tart lemony thing with a little diacetyl butter, little earthy hop, Icky fruity and gritty finish

Mouth is med to lighter bod, med carb slick diacetyl

Overall bad

A: Pours a clear pale yellow in color with moderate to heavy amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and moderate straw yellow + very light golden yellow colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall fizzy sudsy foamy bright white head that quickly reduces to a medium to large sized patch of very thin film covering a little more than 30% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of bready + biscuit malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. Light aromas of grassy hops and light to moderate aromas of lager yeast.

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of bready + biscuit malts with a light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by a light to moderate flavor of lager yeast. Finally there is a light flavor of grassy hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which lingers for a bit before fading away and leaving a clean finish.

M: Light bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Crisp with a clean finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a refreshingly crisp + clean mouthfeel. Classic Pilsner flavors and aromas. Enjoyable.

05/15/20 can:

"Premium Pilsner Beer." 4.4% ABV.

Competently made, with a crisp pilsner malt backbone and subdued grassy hop flavours. It's a Craft brewed take on a premium pilsner, so they're not swinging for the fences here, but it's generally well balanced and built despite obvious simplicity and shallowness.

I wouldn't pay Southern Range's 4 pack prices again, but it's a competent no-frills pils.
