'Tis a murky orange-amber liquid dispensed from a pint can into a clear glass liter mug. A little white head and a little glass lacing complete the picture. There's very little expectations, for there's very little smell. What's there is starchy and devoid of hops. Go with the nose and not the eyes for this one. The taste is juicy sweet and poorly counterbalanced by a limited hoppy bitterness. Alcohol contributes as much as the hops for that effect. The mouthfeel is a little thin and only partially mutes the 8% ABV.

7 Mile Brewery "W.W."
1 pint can, coded "SAY MY NAME 5/5/18"
$3.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: So I just came across this beer in my stash. It seems it was old when I bought it - gotta check those dates more closely. We'll see how it's held up at least, and if it's a wash I'll just delete this review. So, OK, what is it? "Mid-Atlantic India Pale Ale"? I like that. So let's see... it's quite a foamy sucker at this point; lots of carbonation. It's a hazy golden in color beneath a three finger-thick head. Let me top it of... ahh, yes, it looks good. The aroma is still intact as well. At least I think it is. It's citrusy/tropical, and just lightly grassy. I'm finding pineapple, melon, orange, and pink grapefruit. It's not super bright but it's clear. There's some sweetish, bready malt there as well, and a touch of actual yeast aroma although it doesn't seem that cloudy. On to the flavor... mmm, that's pretty good. The malt is much fuller than the nose suggests. It's mainly bready, but also a touch biscuity. The hops work well with it; I'm glad they didn't add caramel malts to it or anything weird. Hmmm, thinking of that, weird malts, there could be some honey malt in here but I'm just throwing that out there as a possibility. Back to the hops, I'm getting pineapple-orange upfront, followed by some melon, and then grapefruit but there's really not a lot of grapefruit there. I missed some peach and soft apricot there, and I'd also say there's some light blueberry and apple as well. Did they use Mosaic for this? That's the only hop I've ever gotten blueberry notes from. or I'm just imagining it. It's got some bitterness to it, but it's also sweet, and it's hard to pinpoint where it's at. It comes across like 40 but with all of that malt there it's got to be up above 50. And with that in mind, how strong is this? 8%! Ayyyyeeee! I'd better be careful. That's a respectable amount though, and I'm not finding the alcohol other than a very light touch at the back of the throat and I'm about half of the way through it at this point. You know, I'm getting some mango at this point as well. I like it, it's very tropical. So what else? Medium with a dextrinous feel and a smooth, fine-bubbled median carbonation. It's almost like it's medium-full in body. No problems there though, that works. And I guess that's it, so I just have to sum up. Hmmmm. I honestly think on this one that the review covers, it, meaning that I'm just going to be repeating what I've just written. I'll go with 'I like it, it's very tropical.' Oh, wait, I missed the head retention and lacing. Very good head retention I think, and some very good, thin but fairly wide ranging lacing. That's a toss up... is it a 4 or a 4.25? I think I'm going to have to go with a 4; and that yeasty note is still there in the nose so that drags it down a bit. In the end I'm pretty pleased with this, and although my father grew up in Atlantic City and I've been going to the Jersey shore (yeah, that's how we say it here) I don't think I've ever been through Rio Grande and I'm going to have to change that. I think I'll head down to the shore this weekend to visit 7 Mile.

Appearance: pours a yellowish orange color with a 1/2" head.

Smell: mild citrus and some grassiness are picked up by the nose.

Taste: caramel, orange, pineapple, melon, and a moderate bitterness. Alcohol is well hidden.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer. Crisp throughout.

Overall: a well balanced IPA with a nice citrus and tropical fruit flavors.

Acquired can in a trade - my introduction to a brewery previously unknown to me. There are a plethora of IPAs available in my market area but I think this one could hold its own against these local competitors. Surprisingly nicely balanced IPA with plenty of body and depth along with an 8% ABV. Overall, a solid addition to the IPA world. Also a rather interesting can design. If this were available in my geographic area, I'd be a repeat purchaser.

Average pour yields 2-3 fingers of eggshell white foam, level surface even as you watch it sizzle down through the glass sides, noticeably fluffy, in turn wispy lacing with no stick. Bright golden orange color, translucent without a lot of haze, marked most by the storm of bubbles throughout. Beautiful nose of croissant flakes, orange blossom, rose petals and ripe apricot, peach fruit before moving onto tar, asphalt and close to beef jerky, the herbaceous dimension seems more dry and taut than wet and leafy, overall stuffs the nostrils and not keen on leaving. Full-bodied, the carbonation imbues it with a velvety churn but doesn’t really lift it off the palate. The orange, tangerine to lime citrus thick and pulpy. Leans more tropical here by emphasizing pineapple, mango fruit in addition to the poached peach, apricot base. The sweetness stops short of getting tiresome and bready notes, pepper and tarry earth sit down at the table. Masks the ABV very well. Still, no doubt it is a mouthful and those who prefer angular, grassy IPA beers may want to pass. If you like it super-juicy this will hit the bulls eye and you will eagerly reach for the next one.
