Poured from 22oz corked & caged bottle into my BeerAdvocate teku. This is a "Belgian-style tripel ale bottle conditioned with Brettanomyces", and is Figurehead's 100th batch. This bottle is labeled as number 44 of 72.
Appearance: clear golden hue with a light effervescence and two fingers of chunky ivory foam that dissipates rather quickly. Still, a very pretty beer.
Smell: sweetly malty with that pear-y orchard-y character that I like so much in a tripel, but overlayed with a nice hit of Brett funk. You know what, it actually really works for me.
Taste: malty and sweet with a rather funkalicious farmhouse character about it. Earthy, yet fruity. If you like Brett, this will work for you. I think it's an interesting exploration of what you can do with a tripel, and it's successful, if not transcendent.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a big carbonation and huge creaminess. That Brett had a lot to work with in the bottle with this big tripel, and it did yeoman's work. Excellent.
Overall: I like this beer a lot. Whether to call it a tripel or a wild ale -- I think it retains enough of its tripel essence to be called such, and be what it is: an interesting take on the subject matter. Well worth trying if you get the chance.
