Poured into a Reuben's Brew small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing nearly opaque in the glass with a thin khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, fruit (pomegranate), Belgian yeast and light smoke. Flavor is smoky dark toasted malt, pomegranate, Belgian yeast, very light hints of chocolate and coffee. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. BA used to have a Belgian stout style and I miss it; stouts made with Belgian yeast have a very distinct flavor from other fruited stouts. This one has both characters, but doesn't really taste much like any American stout, which is the style that most people choose for these in the absence of anything else. That being said, this is a nice domestic take on the Belgian stout style. There is the distinct general fruitiness of the yeast and a clear note from the pomegranate (probably juice). Pleasant light smokiness. Flavor is somewhat mild, but hits the characters of the style with good Belgian yeast notes. Pomegranate is integrated nicely with only a light tartness appropriate for the fruit. Enjoyable and I'll be checking out the different versions each year.
