The boys from Griffin Claw think they've won the Coney Wars, but to us, our first two collaborations were just the first shots. Regardless of the ill will between these two great coney destinations, the Griffin Claw crew came out and brewed a foundational (hint, hint) porter with us. We're glad they did, rounding out a truly essential component of our English-style repertoire that we don't get to see in Cincinnati very often.

16 oz can, served in a Tulip stout glass. No date on can, but I'll presume it is a recent brew since it just showed up in a local store.
Appearance: Mostly clear brown to dark copper beer with a persistent light tan 1/3" thick head. Some sheets and strands of persistent lacing noted.
Smell: Toasted malt, a little bit of a metallic note, a very light note of Fuggle-style hops.
Taste: Toasted malt, a little hint of chocolate (cocoa) powder, toffee, and some complex bitterness at the finish that is part Fuggle hops, part roasted malt, and a little smoky.
Mouthfeel: Good thickness, light carbonation (but still get a gentle scrubbing of the palate), and finish that is both a little dry and a little wet. I can't quite describe it - one moment I'm thinking it's dry with no residual taste, and then a few seconds after that it's not.
Overall / Drinkability: A complex and interesting porter. Far too often I've been getting porters that come across more like stouts, but this one is definitely in the porter category. Enjoyable on its own, but I think it would pair well with food. I do find that just one pint per evening is enough though.

From the 16 oz can in a snifter. This solid English porter pours a deep
mahogany tinged brwon with a nice head of khaki foam that settles to
a thick ring, thin clumping layer, and displays some nice lacing. Nose of
toasted malts, dark chocolate, faint cream, and subtle char. Flavors expand
on the nose with balanced char and roast to the fore, dark chocolate, brulee,
subtle marshmallow, and subtle coffee dashed with toffee. Mouth feel is
medium full, light soft English style carbonation, smooth, moderately coating,
and finishing nicely balanced between sweet malt and char/roast.
Overall, a solid English style porter!
Cheers
